With an election on everyone’s mind, it’s wonderful to see Year 6 students at King’s Christian College, QLD immersed in democracy as they recreated what they had observed in Canberra for their ‘A Day in Parliament’ culminating event. Recreating the House of Representatives in their school auditorium, they had everyone from a team of online bloggers to security, Ministers, Shadow Ministers, Speakers, the press, food caterers and even cleaners! A Day in Parliament - by Lael Jeon & Mackenzie Dawson (6A)
Following our Canberra trip and project launch and with only two weeks to prepare, everyone was working hard for this great moment, "A day in King's Parliament." As we looked around, we saw hard workers everywhere. We took on real life roles to make a parliament run; from a team of online bloggers to security. There were Ministers, Shadow Ministers, Speakers, the press (reporters with camera men) that interviewed our ministers, food caterers and even cleaners. It was incredible see everyone’s talents and strengths shine in the roles that they chose.
A Day in parliament was an amazing experience where our entire grade assisted in recreating the House of Representatives inside the King's auditorium. We designed our parliament on what we all observed in Canberra and the prop team did an awesome job making it look like the real thing. Our Government Project was incredible, despite the unexpected protesters! But the security team dealt with that one.
The Parliament was open to Year 5 students and any parents that wanted to come. They had their own viewing gallery. The debate was live streamed by our students with 121 people watching online. The parents and guests who came, or watched online, had the opportunity to vote for or against the 9 topics that were debated on the day. This was facilitated by our voting poll team and the winning results were posted online by our bloggers. The catering team had prepared Aussie snacks. Including Vegemite sandwiches, lamingtons and Australia shaped fondant cookies.
“This day was an amazing experience for us. With interviews going on, parents and guests voting and a real parliament atmosphere. It was clear that all of our hard work and determination made this an outstanding and enjoyable event.”
